The allure of the world-famous Taj Mahal is what attracts most people to Agra and its legendary splendour attracts more visitors than anywhere else in India. Few architectural monuments are so photogenic and immense in both size and intricate detail. UNESCO aptly describe it as ‘the jewel of Muslim art in India’, and it is often called one of the most beautiful buildings in the world – we have to agree.
Long glassy pools and pristine gardens lead to the mausoleum, providing space for the throngs of people that visit each day. Other visitors cannot be avoided, so we simply recommend visiting at sunrise or sunset when The Taj Mahal is at its quietest and the light is at its best.
The monument naturally dominates the scene in Agra, but both the Red Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah (otherwise known as The Baby Taj) are hugely impressive and not to be missed either.
