Home to the fabled Golden Temple, Amritsar is the holy city of the Sikh faith and is intimately connected to Sikhism’s colourful history. Life in Amritsar is deeply influenced by the holy shrines of the Golden Temple and our half-day tour of Amritsar essentially involves a visit to the magnificent Golden Temple – which is the lavishly decorated and holiest shrine to the Sikhs. The origin of the temple dates back to 1577, though the temple was completed in 1601. Within a few minutes walk of the Golden Temple is Jallianwala Bagh, a temple that commemorates the 2,000 Indians who were killed or wounded at this site, shot indiscriminately by the British forces in 1919.  Following on the tour continues to the famous Khalsa College, which has a rich history and is one of the finest pieces of architecture in the city. Later in the evening you may wish to visit to the Golden Temple again at night, when the temple is beautifully illuminated. At this point it’s possible to witness the Palki Ceremony, an atmospheric tradition where the Sikh Holy Book is paraded triumphantly through a crowd of worshippers and ‘put to bed’ for the night. Alternatively we can organise a visit to the Wagah Border Ceremony, please just let us know.
