Olavipe is an extraordinary homestay nestled within a backwaters plantation, less than an hour south of Cochin. The house belongs to Anthony and Rema Therakan; an attentive and well-travelled pair who seek to share stories, discuss politics and make you feel at home. The property itself is an intimate colonial mansion that has been in Anthony’s family for six generations. The intricate arch ways, exquisite floor tiles and antique Keralan furniture is testament to its history as the heritage home of this prominent Syrian – Christian family. The organic estate stretches 40 acres and is lush with vanilla, pepper, nutmeg, fruits and goats. Days here can be spent leisurely wondering through the spice gardens, sipping tea, chatting to local fishermen, enjoying G&Ts as the sun sets, and spending chatty evenings over home-cooked food.
Rooms
The house has a quirky nature, with high ceilings, teak floors and completely individual rooms. These are simple but tastefully decorated with en-suite shower rooms. Three of these are upstairs within the main house and one is downstairs. There’s no air-conditioning here, instead you’ll find shutters and high beds to ensure cool air circulates beneath you.
