Kothamangalam is a rural location that sits conveniently between Cochin and Munnar, in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The area has become known for Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, an evergreen lowland forest home to rich and diverse birdlife. Some argue the sanctuary to be the richest bird habitat in peninsular India; however poor guiding in the area means the sanctuary has never been enjoyed to its full potential. Visitors are also drawn to the area due to Mundackal Plantation Homestay, a warm and friendly homestay famed for its cookery lessons.
