Tucked down a quiet street, Ranjit’s Svaasa is a 250-year-old red brick haveli that was once a 19th and 20th guesthouse for visiting officials to Amritsar. The now 19-room boutique hotel is arguably quite simple and slightly faded but we love its elegant character and warm atmosphere. Owned by interior designer, Rama Mehra, means the property has been individually and tastefully furnished; think old photographs, locally inspired bedspreads, and carved wooden furniture. The outside areas are wonderful, with rambling plants and cosy courtyards. One of the major attractions of Ranjit Svaasa is the spa, offering body wraps, massages, scrubs and reflexology. The restaurant serves a selection of local and western foods that can be enjoyed outside or in. We feel that, despite being a little dated, Ranjit Svaasa is one of the best options in Amritsar, an area that has a dearth of good hotels.
